A Divorce Strategy for Social Security Benefits

A Divorce Strategy for Social Security Benefits

Jean has been a client of MainStreet Investment Group for many years.  She was married to her husband for 20 years before getting divorced.  She never remarried.  While working with Jean, we made her aware of a strategy where she was eligible to file to take half of her ex-husband’s Social Security benefit.  This amount was close to Jean’s full benefit she would be eligible for at normal retirement age.  With access to this income in a time of need, Jean was able to defer taking her Social Security benefits until age 67.

This is only one example of a strategy we know some divorced clients can benefit from.  We stay apprised of changing regulations so when a life transition occurs, we can help clients through the financial side of the change.
